TIMELINE

1861-1865 – Morphine was first used in the Civil War as medicine to heal the soldiers.


18980– “Heroin is first manufactored by the Bayer Company for commercial distribution. At the time, heroin is perceived as less habit forming than morphine, and as such is given to those individuals who were addicted to morphine, thus exacerbating their addiction.” “Timeline of the Opioid Crisis – Column Health.”


1924 – The start of a revolution, in 1924 The Anti-Heroin Act gets put into act and stops the manufacturing and selling in the U.S.


1970 – The Controlled Substances Act is written into law.  It creates groupings of drugs based on their potential for abuse.  Heroin is classified as a schedule I drug while other opiates including morphine, fentanyl, oxycodone and methadone are schedule II


1995 – OxyContin was made by Purdue Pharmaceuticals to have a “safe pain pill” which the company pushed OxyContin almost pugnaciously.”
